Film director Rashid Mashharawi is considered the first Palestinian filmmaker who worked on achieving cinematic works from inside the occupied Palestinian lands. His first film was Gawaz Safar (1986) before the first Intifada, Then he directed Al-Malga in 2989, then Dar Wodor in 1990. He the Mashhrawi company in 1990, television and film production company, which produced his first feature film Hata Eshar Akher in 1993, and his second feature film Haifa in 1996. Haifa was the first Palestinian film to be officially screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996. He also founded the Children's Film Festival and the mobile cinema in Palestine, and produced a number of films, including Rabab in 1997 and Tawator in 1998. His films included some experimental works such as Qamar Wahed and Shahrazad. In 2008, he completed his fifth feature film Laila's Birthday, which was awarded more than 20 international awards and was screened in in most countries and festivals around the world. In 2014 he completed the documentary film Letters from Yarmouk which tackled the siege of Yarmouk camp. Mashharawi has won many awards at international festivals, and his work has been screened in film festivals and theaters in most countries of the world. He also participated as a jury member in several Arab and international festival.
